The Ebonyi Peoples’ Political/Economic Summit 2026 has endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, as a credible alternative for Ebonyi State in the 2027 governorship election, while calling for a change of leadership.

The summit, held yesterday in Abakaliki, concluded with a communiqué rejecting the notion of automatic second-term entitlement and emphasising that political leadership must be determined by performance, competence, integrity and accountability.

According to the communiqué, participants expressed the view that the incumbent administration had not sufficiently justified another mandate based on the evidence presented at the gathering. The summit consequently called for a change of leadership and endorsed Odii as an alternative for the state.

The position reflects the summit’s call for a governance model in which public officeholders are assessed on their records, policy outcomes and contributions to the welfare of the people rather than on incumbency alone.

However, the endorsement also places expectations on Odii to demonstrate how his aspiration would translate into concrete policies and measurable improvements in Ebonyi’s economic and social development.

The summit rejected the idea that an incumbent governor is automatically entitled to a second term, citing Sections 179 and 180 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as part of the legal framework governing gubernatorial elections and tenure.

It maintained that incumbency should not be treated as an entitlement and that voters retain the right to assess an administration’s performance before deciding whether to renew its mandate through the electoral process.

The communiqué also condemned alleged intimidation, harassment and threats directed at the opposition politicians, critics, civil society organisations and media practitioners.

It called for an environment in which political competition can take place freely, with respect for fundamental rights and equal protection under the law.

The summit’s position underscores the importance of peaceful political engagement, respect for dissenting opinions and the protection of democratic participation as Ebonyi approaches the 2027 governorship election.

The summit outlined six major development priorities intended to address economic challenges, expand opportunities and improve public services across the state, to include fiscal transparency and accountability, economic diversification, agro-industrial development, mining sector reforms, human capital development and infrastructure expansion.

The proposals provide a policy framework for addressing poverty, stimulating job creation and converting Ebonyi’s agricultural and mineral resources into sustainable economic opportunities.

While the summit’s endorsement of Anyichuks represents a political position adopted by participants, translating its development proposals into practical outcomes would require detailed planning, sustainable financing and effective implementation.

Key questions include how the proposed projects would be funded, what partnerships would be required to attract private investment, how projects would be prioritised and what timelines would guide their execution.

Clear performance indicators and transparent monitoring mechanisms would also be necessary to enable citizens to assess progress and hold any future administration accountable for its commitments.

For Odii, the policy priorities outlined at the summit provide a basis for explaining how his proposed leadership would address infrastructure deficits, strengthen public institutions, expand economic opportunities and improve social services.

The extent to which these proposals could be implemented would ultimately depend on their technical feasibility, available resources, institutional capacity and the policies adopted by the government.

The Ebonyi Peoples’ Political/Economic Summit 2026 has placed governance performance, accountability and development at the centre of its message ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Its communiqué rejects automatic second-term entitlement, calls for a change of leadership and identifies Anyichuks as the candidate it endorses, while outlining a development agenda spanning fiscal transparency, economic diversification, agro-industrialisation, mining, human capital and infrastructure.

As political activities gather momentum towards 2027, the proposals raise broader questions about how candidates will address the state’s development priorities and how voters can evaluate their promises against verifiable records and practical plans.
