Nigeria’s index case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease has been evacuated abroad for further treatment as health authorities intensify efforts to trace and isolate people who may have been exposed to the infection.
The 42-year-old woman was airlifted from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 6am on Monday, October 26, aboard a medical aircraft.
The patient, identified as the wife of a Swiss diplomat, was reportedly transported from Abuja city centre in an ambulance convoy, accompanied by diplomatic vehicles into the airport’s private jet area.
Her evacuation comes as health authorities step up contact tracing to identify people who may have had contact with the confirmed case and prevent further transmission.
As of the latest report, 53 contacts linked to the patient had been identified and isolated as part of the public health response.
The Bundibugyo strain is a type of Ebola virus that can cause severe illness. The evacuation of the patient for treatment abroad comes amid heightened attention to containment measures and the need for close monitoring of potentially exposed individuals.
However, further details about the country receiving the patient, her current condition and the medical arrangements for her treatment had not been disclosed in the report.
The development remains a significant public health concern, with contact tracing, isolation and appropriate infection prevention measures central to efforts to limit the potential spread of the virus.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
