The Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has held the second edition of its Golf Tournament at the Calabar Golf Course, drawing top military officers, government officials and traditional rulers from within and outside Cross River State.
The tournament was hosted by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Chiedozie Donald Okehie, as part of activities aimed at promoting camaraderie, physical fitness and civil-military relations.
Among dignitaries at the colourful event were the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Peter Odey, who served as Special Guest of Honour; former Chief of Naval Staff, Dele Joseph Ezeoba (rtd); the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigerian Army; the Flag Officers Commanding Naval Doctrine Command and Logistics Command; and His Royal Majesty, Patrick Chinedu Acholonu.
Also in attendance were the Commandant, Naval War College Nigeria; the Chief Staff Officer, Eastern Naval Command; the Command Coordinator, Nigerian Navy Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA); commanders, commandants and commanding officers of units under the Eastern Naval Command, alongside several senior serving and retired officers.
The tournament teed off with a ceremonial drive performed by Vice Admiral Ezeoba (rtd), Rear Admiral Okehie, Igwe Acholonu and Engr. Bassey Nkposong, Captain of the Calabar Golf Club.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the event, Rear Admiral Okehie underscored the importance of golf beyond competition, highlighting its health and social benefits.
“First, golf promotes physical fitness. Walking through this course covers approximately 10 kilometres. It is a cardio-intensive course, undulating and challenging,” he said.
“Second, golf fosters networking and social interaction. It provides an opportunity to meet people, build relationships and strengthen bonds. Golf is a community; it is a family.”
Participants competed across various categories, showcasing skill and sportsmanship in a relaxed but competitive atmosphere.
The event concluded with the presentation of trophies, awards and souvenirs to outstanding performers and participants, followed by group photographs.
Observers noted that the tournament further strengthened collaboration among military formations and enhanced ties between the Navy and the civil community in Cross River State.
