As part of its 2026 female theatre series, tagged: ‘Powerfully Unapologetic’, the Duke of Shomolu Foundation (DOSF) will in Lagos stage four major theatre productions from December 24-27.
The programme will conclude the Foundation’s six-play theatre season, which is focused on promoting female creativity, leadership and storytelling while exploring aspects of Nigeria’s history, culture, identity and people.
The series began during the Easter period with the staging of Kokoro the Blind Minstrel and Dora. However, the December production will feature four accomplished female theatre directors drawn from universities across Nigeria.
Opening on December 24 with Hafsatu, directed by Prof. Rasheedah Liman of Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the following day, audiences will see Princess Inikpi, directed by Dr Tayo Joan Adenuga of Department of Performing Arts and Film Studies, Kwara State University, Malete.
The third production, Makamba, will be staged on December 26 under the direction of Prof. Ifure Ufford-Azorbo of Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of Uyo. The series will close on December 27 with The Dein of Agbor, directed by Prof. Julie Okoh of Department of Creative Arts, Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.
According to the Duke, the initiative was designed to place women at the centre of Nigerian theatrical storytelling, by providing accomplished female creatives with opportunities to interpret significant stories through their artistic perspectives.
He added that ‘Powerfully Unapologetic’ goes beyond a collection of stage productions, describing the project as an effort to promote representation and cultural ownership in Nigeria’s theatre industry.
With the four productions, which have Mofoluwake Edgar as the executive producer, DOSF will complete its 6-play female theatre series, bringing together playwrights and directors from different parts of the country.
