The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old driver, Ayoade Idowu, over the death of 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official, Mr Sesan Adediji, following a road crash in Akure, the state capital.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure, Ondo State.
The statement reads, “The Ondo State Police Command regrets to confirm a fatal road accident involving a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official, Mr Adediji Sesan, aged 35years, which occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure, Ondo State.
“Preliminary information indicates that the incident involved a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX, driven by one Ayoade Idowu, aged 37years.
“The victim, who was reportedly on routine patrol with his team, was said to have flagged down the vehicle for a routine inspection of its particulars. The driver initially stopped but allegedly drove off when asked to produce the relevant documents, hitting the VIO official in the process.
“The victim sustained serious head injuries and was immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was subsequently confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

The police spokesman said the driver has been arrested and detained, while preliminary investigations are ongoing.
He stated that police operatives have visited the scene and commenced investigations, adding that the case file is expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu expressed his condolences to the family, colleagues and associates of the deceased over this tragic loss.
He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that appropriate legal action would follow in accordance with the law.
The command urged motorists to exercise patience, obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised traffic enforcement officials, noting that no road user should endanger the life of another in an attempt to evade routine checks or traffic regulations.
“The Ondo State Police Command remains committed to ensuring road safety, protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order across the state,” the statement further reads.
