Dream Team tag will inspire U-23 Eagles, says Obuh

Former Flying Eagles head coach, John Sam Obuh has urged the Nigerian Football Federation not to alter the Dream Team tag of the U-23 team, as the name served as a major inspiration, AOIFootball.com reported.

Obuh shared his view in light of the debate on whether the team should be called the Olympic team or maintain the Dream Team VII tag.

“Well, the Dream Team tag was because of the miracle they did in Atlanta ’96 which was indeed like a dream to everybody although I like the U-23 tag. But if the name Dream Team will spur them to victory, then I strongly believe we should maintain it,” Obuh reasoned.

Originally known as the Nigerian Olympic male football team, the team earned the name “Dream Team” after it’s heroics at the 1996 Olympics in the USA, where they defeated Brazil in the semifinals before eventually clinching Gold by beating Argentina in the final. Subsequently, the team was then named Dream team, as it also spurred the Dream Team IV to a silver medal in 2008, whilst the Dream Team VI also won a bronze.

The Dream Team VII led by Imama Amapakabo will now hope to emulate the successes of their predecessors.
