In an era when digital risks loom large across industries; from SMEs to global financial services, one professional is building bridges between academic insight and operational security.

Meet Dr Aliyu Abdullahi Aliyu, a cyber-security analyst, researcher and mentor whose work spans classrooms, boards and start-up hubs, ensuring that cyber security isn’t just a technical ambition but an inclusive reality.

From Academia to Industry and Back
Dr Aliyu’s path is distinctive. After earning a BSc in Information Technology in Organisations at the University of Southampton, he went on to complete an MSc in Cyber-Security with Management, graduating with Distinction which equipped him with both the deep technical foundations and the managerial lens to apply them strategically.

His doctoral work, a PhD in Cyber Security focused on building a cyber security and risk management ontology tailored to SMEs, informed by threat-intelligence data streams.

On the academic side, Dr Aliyu served as a lecturer. He also worked in collaboration with the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ, developing a cyber security maturity assessment framework for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Translating Research into Real-World Impact
Today, Dr Aliyu serves as a Cyber Security Analyst. Beyond the corporate environment, he engages with the start-up ecosystem as a mentor for the Greater Manchester Digital Security Hub (DiSH), helping early-stage startups, by applying his research maturity assessment to real-world ventures.

Dr Aliyu has worked as a consultant for the Federal Ministry of Communications and Innovation and Digital Economy, where he collaborated with the World Bank’s ID4D Project to design a cybersecurity awareness and digital inclusion framework. His contribution in this project reflects his influence from boardrooms to national policy.

Why His Approach Stands Out
What sets Dr Aliyu apart is his ability to blend deep technical expertise with human-centred impact. His research contributions to the field extend through peer-reviewed publications across global journals. His papers on Cyber Threat Intelligence, Incident Response, and Ontology-Driven Risk Management have informed both academic and industry discourse. He also holds multiple professional certifications cementing his status as both a strategist and a hands-on practitioner.

Empowering The Next Generation
For Dr Aliyu, cybersecurity isn’t just about systems only, but equally about people. His teaching philosophy emphasizes inclusive learning, digital accessibility, and human-centred resilience. Whether guiding students or mentoring start-up founders, his approach is grounded in empathy, education, and empowerment. “Security is for everyone,” he often says. “Our real challenge isn’t just in building stronger firewalls but in building stronger people.”

The Road Ahead
With his unique blend of experience as an academic, a practitioner, a consultant, and a mentor, Dr Aliyu is shaping what cyber security will look like in the years ahead. From tool-building and ontology-design to national frameworks and SME upskilling, his work bridges the divide between complex cyber-threat landscapes and the people and organisations who must defend against them. And while certifications and keynotes may catch attention, for him the real legacy lies in the empowered business owner, the more secure organisation, and the resilient community.

“As we embed intelligence and maturity into cybersecurity,” he remarks, “we must always remember that our ultimate aim is dignity, inclusion and trust.” Dr Aliyu’s journey reminds us that in cyber security, it’s not enough to know how to stop hackers; we must also know how to uplift communities, shape behaviours and ensure no one is left behind in the transition to a digital future.
