Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State has warned newly-elected Council Chairmen and Councillors not to disrespect Emirs in the state, but accord them due respect.
He noted that the traditional rulers were recognised in the 2008 Local Government law as President-in-Council and they must be treated with utmost respect and dignity.
The governor stated this during the official swearing in of elected Chairmen and Councillors at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin-Kebbi. He, however, appealed to the council officers to be above board.
He also disclosed that opposition leaders in the state worked for the unity of the state during the July 15, local government election held across 21 Councils in the state.
His words: “It is important and most worthy to mention that our state was more united as a result of this local government election. Before the election, prominent personalities from other political parties decided to join the state government to mobilise people for the poll for the betterment of our state. All we are witnessing today is as a result of that efforts.”
“Since we came into office we have undergone several reforms in the local government administration designed to bridge gap in the councils. We urge the newly elected chairmen and councillors to participate and cooperate with the government so that we can achieve landmark development in our state.
” I want to assure our Emirs that the Kebbi State local government laws 2008 assigned a prominent roles to Emirs as President-in-Council of local government within their respective emirates. We have signed the undertaken that the State government will ensure that elected local government chairmen respected the law “.
In his remark, APC chairman in the state, Attairu Maccido, appealed to the elected Council officers to emulate current administration in the state for better development in the state.
