From Isaac Job, Uyo
A Director in Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Prof Aniekan Nyarks, has lauded the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof OtoAbasi Akpan, for facilitating 32 academic programmes within the short period of his appointment in the university.
Nyarks also enumerated other achievements of the Vice Chancellor within the period of assumption of duties describing it as unprecedented in the history of the institution.
Speaking with Sunday Sun in Uyo, Nyarks said the institution has witnessed turnaround success in all areas of its endeavours since the new VC came on board.
“Akwa Ibom State University today can be described as a success story because of the decision of the new Vice Chancellor and his team to redefine the status of the university.
“Immediately he was appointed the Vice Chancellor, even in the Acting capacity, he sprang into action and extended the Faculties and Departments. First, he brought in the Health Science Faculty, Nursing Science, Pharmacy, Community Health, Public Health, Medical Laboratory, etc, and eventually, the Faculty of Law.
“We thank His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, for not overlooking him; rather he appreciated this great and astute leader, and quickly confirmed his appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University.”
According to him, one of the recorded successes is the overwhelming and excellent performance of the university in the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination (JUPEB) under the able leadership of its Director Prof. Aniekan Nyarks
Nyarks while recounting successes of the new VC explained that during the 2024/2025 academic session, AKSU JUPEB foundation school recorded one of the best results in Nigeria.
“In the 2025/2026 session, the institution has created the same excellent impact again by recording 97 per cent distinction performance.”
He defined success as the achievement of a desired goal adding that the pragmatic attainment of an outstanding performance is real and not storytelling.
“Now, he has crowned it all by securing accreditation for additional 32 new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
For this, he deserves the star award from His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
“As it is often said that a tree cannot make a forest, we realize that one of the reasons for this tremendous achievements is the total dedication and commitment of the Principal Officers, Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments such as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Iniobong Umotong; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Akanikpo Ibok, the former Registrar, Dr. Ebi G. Eno Ibanga and Prof. Aniekan Nyarks, Director, Akwa Ibom State University Basic Studies Centre, among others
Nyarks who is about to round off his tenure as Director in the institution said he was in a better position to assess the success of the VC having been in the system for a long time and witnessed performance of others.
“As a Director of this institution, I have assisted in training numerous students for admission into year two (2) from 2021 till date. I was appointed as the pioneer Director of AKSU Basic Studies in 2021 and I have worked relentlessly to raise the institution to the height of its greatness today.”
