Does fashion really have to be one-dimensional?

Here’s a food for thought: What stops you from exploring fashion and getting overtly creative with your outfits? Or better still, what stops you from being creative with your styling and overall fashion sense, rather than making it one-dimensional?

When it comes to blending creativity with fashion, this is where Zhea Fashion World comes in. Zhea Fashion World is a fashion powerhouse that has been running for over 7 years. In 2018, Suliat Olajumoke Folawewo brilliantly launched the brand. And ever since, Zhea’s fashion world has been responsible for creating and distributing top-notch, meticulously crafted, well-blended, fashionable outfits.

In a fashion landscape that is hungry for authenticity, Zhea Fashion World stands out and channels African textile traditions into silhouettes that feel transgenerational yet unapologetically modern.

Without saying much, the fashion house released its 2023 collection, and the public cannot stop talking about it. This is why today I will be detailing an assessment of several key outfits from the collection.

You’d agree with me that this first piece is a show stealer.

When you step out of your house with this outfit, there’s every possibility that you would make a good first impression, give off a luxurious aura, and also exude class.

Zhea’s fashion brilliance comes into play here. It immediately draws one in and tells you that indeed, Zhea is a master of her craft. The way she has handled heavy silks and structural manipulation with this outfit isn’t child’s play. This gown is built for the highest-stakes event, making you showcase wealth through its texture alone.

The initial impact is all about light and metallic warmth. The choice of fabric is key to the output of the dress. It had to be a substantial, high-quality Mikado or heavy duchesse silk to bring out that golden bodice shape.

The colour pairing itself is brilliant. A deep, lustrous gold paired with a softer champagne beige? Extremely unique.

The fabric not only looks adorned but also aggressively folded and wrapped around the torso. This makes it crisp and clean, one that defines the body. This structure perfectly cinches the waistline.

The sleeves are where the genius lies. They start with the bodice’s wide-open shape, flowing down in voluminous silk wings, but are then brought back to a point near the shoulder with small, simple drawstring ties. The outfit has a modern touch attached to it. It acknowledges the need for volume while giving the wearer control.

The skirt’s silhouette looks like the royal regalia of a mermaid. The control over the heavy silk is what seals the deal. The folds and drapes on the golden top are flawless; this is high-level craftsmanship. The adjustable drawstring sleeves are a phenomenal detail, blending architectural volume with contemporary functionality; it’s truly clever. The opulent, warm colour palette ensures this gown will look spectacular in flash photography.

The ruching on the lower skirt is excessive. While the textural contrast is desired, the density and position of the two heavily gathered tiers severely disrupt the dress’s vertical flow. They visually stop the body’s natural line, making the skirt appear heavy and slightly bulbous at the knee. The top is so sleek and sharp; the bottom half, unfortunately, feels unnecessarily cluttered and busy in comparison. It’s a design decision that undermines the clean elegance established above.

Recommendations: The design would benefit from a simplified skirt volume. The two aggressive horizontal lines of gathering are the problem. The designer should either remove the lower tier entirely and allow the top ruching to transition into a clean, floating column that pools on the floor, or, if volume is the absolute goal, replace the dense gathering with finer, vertical shirring. This would create the texture without the harsh, height-cutting horizontal lines. The top is a winner that deserves a perfectly streamlined finish.

Taking a careful look at this outfit, I can see that this is where Zhea truly gets experimental. She takes the austere precision of men’s wear and smashes it against the lace. It’s an edgy, deliberate fashion statement that shows a deep understanding of contrasting textures and geometry.

The entire look is defined by opposition. The top features a tight, one-shoulder design, with a three-dimensional floral appliqué positioned directly on the shoulder. The appliqué, made of layered white ruffles, serves as the bridge between the corset top’s masculine and feminine energy.

This asymmetrical deconstruction is clever: it allows a controlled show of skin while showcasing the inner corsetry. The waistline is sharp, allowing the skirt to flare dramatically.

The total effect arrests anyone who sees the attire. It’s a kind of dress that turns heads. When I look at it, I see Cinderella. This dress is fit for the ball with Prince Charming, and most importantly, it has that magical feel that makes it seem surreal.

The tailoring on the corset-style bodice is impeccable; the geometric angles and cutouts are confident and well-executed, modernising a traditional shape. The overall drama created by the immense shoulder flower guarantees this dress wins every photo opportunity it’s in.

Recommendations: To refine this piece, the designer should immediately consider scaling the shoulder flower down by 15-20% or using graduated fabric for the petals, maybe pinstriping at the base layers and blending to white at the tips. This would visually integrate it better with the bodice.

For the waist transition, the dark pinstripe should be lengthened slightly over the high hip; perhaps with a pointed V or a rounded drop to anchor the structured top before the massive volume of the skirt begins. This minor fix would create a much more flattering and natural visual flow.

The White High-Neck: Modesty, Movement, and Electric Colour

From a display standpoint, this gown gives off one vibe: sophistication. It’s a very current look, speaking to a client who values coverage but refuses to compromise on impact.

The silhouette is tall, controlled, and deeply elegant. The main body is cut from a crisp white satin or heavy silk with a pronounced, clean sheen. This structure is vital to achieving the sharp lines. Regarding the bodice, it is certainly well-crafted. One thing I like is the turtleneck-shaped neckline and precise long sleeves. The cut is quite conservative, really, and it creates an elegant, yet serene canvas.

The top’s primary focus is the central embellishment on the chest: a vivid cluster of three-dimensional fabric flowers rendered in striking electric blue and black/grey. This is the outfit’s big moment of colour. The designer clearly chose this intense blue to shock and energise the pure white background.

Recommendations: The sleeves are recommended to be more fitted and tighter from the elbow down to the wrist. Doing this will give the overall outfit a more pleasing appearance.

The most obvious technical failure is the fit of the long sleeves. They are visibly too loose and baggy around the wrist, immediately ruining the otherwise meticulous, laser-sharp tailoring of the high neck and shoulders. When dealing with this kind of garment, using a sloppy sleeve fit is all shades of wrong.

While many African fashion houses lean heavily on traditional motifs, Zhea Fashion World distinguishes itself by fusing heritage textiles with global tailoring codes, creating a language of cultural luxury that resonates internationally.

Much like Kenneth Ize, a Nigerian fashion designer who has carved a global reputation by elevating Aso Oke into contemporary tailoring, Zhea Fashion World positions itself as a brand that bridges heritage and modernity. While Ize’s work emphasises textile innovation and runway experimentation, Zhea Fashion World distinguishes itself through a focus on cultural luxury, bringing artisanal craft into everyday wear that resonates beyond the catwalk. In this way, the brand asserts its place in the fashion dialogue as both a custodian of African tradition and a challenger to the dominance of Western aesthetics.

The 2023 collection, as mentioned above showcases and solidifies Zhea Fashion World’s position in the fashion industry. The outfits, of course, have shown that they were crafted with utmost care and professionalism; a testament to what true fashion should be all about.

With the final click of my keypad, only one thing comes to mind: what next? I look forward to seeing more beautiful sights of Zhea fashion world’s outfits…
