The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday joined the international community in marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, paying tribute to peacekeepers worldwide for their courage, professionalism and sacrifice in promoting global peace and security.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, in a message commemorating the day, honoured the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving under the United Nations flag, saying their sacrifices continue to inspire efforts toward a safer world.
Disu highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding contribution to international peace support operations, noting that officers of the Nigeria Police Force have served with distinction in numerous United Nations, African Union and regional peacekeeping missions.
He said Nigeria police peacekeepers have continued to demonstrate professionalism and dedication in conflict-affected communities across the globe, enhancing the country’s reputation as a responsible contributor to international peace and security.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” the IGP stressed the need for sustained investment in peacebuilding, capacity development, strong institutions, technology and international cooperation.
He noted that contemporary security threats such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts and violent extremism require innovative and collaborative approaches to peace and security management.
Disu further emphasised the importance of equipping peacekeepers with the requisite skills, training, technology and operational resources to tackle emerging security challenges. He also acknowledged the contributions of female peacekeepers and called for greater participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
While appreciating the sacrifices made by peacekeepers and their families, the IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening its peacekeeping capacity and supporting initiatives that promote international peace and stability.
