Esso Properties Limited has clinched the title of Most Innovative Real Estate Company at the 2024 City People Real Estate Awards, a momentous achievement that reflects the company’s visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to redefining the real estate landscape in Nigeria.

The prestigious award, presented on November 24, 2024, recognizes the company’s exceptional work on its flagship project, the Awele Residential Estate, a one-of-a-kind development that artfully blends Igbo cultural heritage with advanced infrastructure, sustainability, and refined luxury.

The recognition could not have come at a more significant time for Esso Properties, as the real estate industry grapples with rising inflation, volatile exchange rates, and supply chain disruptions. Amid these challenges, Esso Properties has not only stayed afloat but thrived, setting new benchmarks for excellence and innovation.

The award, therefore, serves as both a celebration of the company’s resilience and a testament to its commitment to elevating the standards of housing in Nigeria.
Dr. Smith Ezenagu, the chairman of Esso Group, the conglomerate to which Esso Properties belongs, was visibly elated while accepting the award.

In his acceptance speech, he shared the deeper meaning behind the accolade. “This award means a lot to us, as it represents years of hard work, vision, and a commitment to excellence.

It’s not just a win for Esso Properties but for everyone in Nigeria who dreams of a future where culture, luxury, and sustainability come together,” Ezenagu said. “At Awele, we’ve shown that it is possible to marry the beauty of Eastern Nigerian culture with the needs of modern living.”

Awele Residential Estate, located in Anambra State, is the crown jewel of Esso Properties’ current portfolio. It stands as a bold and refreshing alternative to conventional real estate developments.

Aimed at what Ezenagu fondly refers to as the “Odogwu class,” individuals who are affluent, culturally conscious, and appreciative of elegance, the estate is designed to offer not just homes but a full-fledged lifestyle rooted in identity and innovation.

What sets Awele apart is its meticulous attention to both luxury and sustainability. The estate features solar-powered homes, rainwater harvesting systems, green roofing, and eco-sensitive layouts that encourage walking and community engagement. These are seamlessly integrated with cultural landmarks like botanical gardens, cultural museums, and open-air theaters, where traditions are not only preserved but celebrated.

“Our goal was to create a space that is not only luxurious but also deeply connected to our traditions,” Ezenagu explained. “Awele isn’t just an estate; it’s a lifestyle, one that promotes sustainability, celebrates culture, and supports high-quality living. It’s a place where you’d proudly welcome friends from abroad and say, ‘This is what home looks like.’”

Despite the numerous industry hurdles, including skyrocketing prices of cement and sand, Esso Properties has remained focused on delivering on its promises. Ezenagu highlighted their strategic approach to maintaining quality and gaining trust. “We introduced a bank-backed escrow system to guarantee project completion. That move alone reassured our Diaspora clients and strengthened our credibility,” he noted.
Ezenagu also emphasized the importance of changing the narrative around the South East, which is often overshadowed by negative media portrayals. “The South East is safe, beautiful, and full of opportunity. We celebrated last Christmas in peace and joy,” he said.

“It’s time for wealth to return home. As we say, Aku lue uno, okwue onye kpatara ya: when wealth reaches home, it speaks for its owner.”
The award marks a milestone for Esso Properties but also signals the dawn of a new era for Nigerian real estate, one where culture and innovation go hand in hand to shape communities of pride, purpose, and prosperity.
