From Tony John, Port Harcourt
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Princewill Dike, has urged former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Chibuike Amaechi, to apologise publicly to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Nigerians over his comments on Catholic cleric Cardinal John Onaiyekan.
Dike, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, made the call on Saturday in a statement posted on his Facebook page, Princewill Dike Platform, while reacting to the disagreement between Amaechi and Wike over the cleric’s position on President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the 2027 elections.
He recalled that Amaechi had said during a television appearance that Onaiyekan was neither political nor biased in his assessment of the Tinubu administration.
Wike, however, challenged that position, arguing that religious leaders could have political preferences despite their clerical responsibilities.

According to Dike, the FCT minister maintained that the Cardinal’s subsequent comments, including his admission that he had a preferred presidential candidate, supported his argument that religious leaders could favour particular candidates.
Reacting, Dike said Amaechi should apologise to Wike and Nigerians, arguing that Onaiyekan’s remarks contradicted Amaechi’s position that the cleric was apolitical.
He maintained that public figures should acknowledge mistakes when subsequent developments undermine their earlier claims.
Dike also criticised what he described as Amaechi’s failure to apologise, alleging that the former governor lacked the integrity and conscience to do so.
