Digital Literacy: Senator Salisu trains, distributes laptops to 200 student leaders, graduates in Ogun

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, has organized digital literacy and tech entrepreneurship training for 200 student leaders selected from tertiary institutions and youths in Ogun Central.

The 3-training tagged “Capacity Building in Digital Literacy and Entrepreneurship for Undergraduates and Recent Graduates from Ogun Central Senatorial District”, held at the Senator’s Constituency Office in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, was attended by the Students Union Presidents, members of student representative councils of both state and federal institutions and students who graduated recently.

Addressing participants during the closing of the capacity building training, at the weekend, Senator Salisu, said he facilitated the training with the support of the National Productivity Centre, Abuja, in order to enhance their capacity and understanding of digital literacy and tech entrepreneurship.

He added that student leaders across the campuses in Ogun Central and that of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye in Ogun East senatorial district were selected to further equip them for leadership position and boost their capacity to espouse intelligent and highly effective leadership in their various schools.

Salisu, who spoke via a zoom from Nairobi, Kenya where he was attending African summit on cyber crimes and security, lauded the participants for attending the training programme, which he described as a leap into the digital and tech world.

The senator, however, disclosed that the programme was partly facilitated to express his appreciation for the support the students gave him while he was serving as the Chief of Staff to the Governor Dapo Abiodun between 2019 and 2023, and when he was vying for the senatorial seat.

Salisu, who is the Senate Committee Chairman on ICT and Cyber Security, said as a member of the Student Representative Council himself during his undergraduate years at the University of Lagos, declared that he was delighted to facilitate the capacity building training for the student leaders.

While charging the participants to continue to provide the needed exemplary leadership in their various campuses, the senator urged them not to relent on acquiring digital skills capable of developing their entrepreneurial capacity, especially in the tech sector.

He, however, reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of students in his senatorial district through facilitation of infrastructures in schools and capacity building training for the students.

Speaking, the Chief of Staff to the senator, Fasiu Alimi, urged the beneficiaries to inculcate the digital skills and knowledge learnt during the training and begin to work towards becoming entrepreneurs.

The Students Union President of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Afolabi Temitope, commended the Senator Salisu for facilitating the training, submitting that the 3-day programme further broaden his understanding and knowledge of digital literacy and tech entrepreneurship.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of computer laptops and cash grants to the participants at the training courtesy the senator.
