Technology executive Norman Bwuruk Didam has called for digital infrastructure to be incorporated into the planning stages of property development projects, arguing that doing so would improve the long-term adaptability and efficiency of buildings and communities.
In a statement, Didam said digital infrastructure, including broadband connectivity, fibre-optic networks, 5G readiness, smart utility systems, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, cybersecurity frameworks and data management platforms—has become an important component of modern developments.
He argued that integrating these systems during the planning and construction phases is less expensive than installing them after projects have been completed, adding that early planning could help reduce future operational costs.
According to him, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, remote work, smart mobility and digital healthcare are changing how cities and buildings operate, making digital readiness increasingly important.
Didam also said digital infrastructure could support wider urban planning by enabling technologies used in transportation, public safety, energy management, waste management and environmental monitoring.
He further noted that investors are placing greater emphasis on digitally enabled buildings because of their potential to improve operational efficiency and maintain long-term value.
Didam called on governments to introduce policies that encourage the integration of digital infrastructure into new developments and urged greater collaboration between the public and private sectors to expand broadband connectivity and strengthen communications networks.
He said incorporating digital infrastructure into development planning would help communities adapt to future technological changes and support long-term economic growth.
