Four persons have been killed in Bet/Zatb in Sabon Angwa community  of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State when gunmen attacked the community on Thursday night.

The attack had reportedly invaded the community around 8pm and opened fire on the residents

The recent incident occurred despite the curfew imposed on three local government areas of Barkin, Mangu and Riyom by the Plateau state government.

Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Mr Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the incident in a phone conversation on Friday, said that the community members were taken unawares just as some of them were preparing their dinner

Tengwong, who condemned the attack, described the killing of innocent residents as unacceptable.

He said: “We condemn this latest attack in strong terms and lament the loss of these lives. It is disturbing that communities are still being attacked despite the security measures and curfew put in place to protect residents.”

Tengwong urged security operatives to intensify surveillance and take proactive measures to prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities, saying, “We call on security agencies to strengthen their presence and respond promptly to early warning alerts.”

A resident of the communities, Mr Bulus Jok, who gave account of the incident, regretted that despite the curfew imposed in Barkin Ladi, gunmen still have a free reign roaming the streets and killing innocent citizens.

Jok said that apart from the curfew, there had been an early warning alert sent to the relevant authorities a day before the attack.

He said, “The regrettable thing about this attack, like the previous ones occurred despite that the fact that the state government imposed a dusk to dawn curfew following previous attacks. Now we don’t know what to believe again as this has created very tense situation in our community. More worrisome is the fact that we sent a warning earlier to the authorities when some people witnessed strange moments.”

Jok said that the gunmen had no target in mind, but were just shooting sporadically leading to the death of the four people.
