Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed concern over reports that Nigerian pensioners are considering a nationwide protest over unpaid arrears.

Obi on his verified ‘X’ handle yesterday said it was morally unacceptable for senior citizens, who dedicated their most productive years in service to the country, to be denied their rightful pensions and gratuities.

He noted that only last month, President Bola Tinubu announced that Nigeria had met its revenue target, insisting that such a growth should first reflect in the welfare of the people.

“If that is true, then the moral question is simple: why are our senior citizens, who worked, served, and sacrificed, still owed their rightful pensions and gratuities?

“Revenue growth should first reflect in the lives of the people, especially those in difficult times.”

Obi stressed that the excess revenue being celebrated must not remain on paper but be directed towards settling obligations to pensioners, restoring their dignity, and assuring workers that the country values their labour and service.

“Anything less is unjust and unacceptable. Good leadership and compassion are inseparable. A new Nigeria is possible,” Obi added.
