Says country has made significant progress in 25 years of uninterrupted rule

First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has called for stronger protection of Nigerians’ rights, dignity, and freedoms, saying democracy can only thrive when the interests of citizens remain at its centre.
She made the call on Tuesday in a message to mark the 2026 International Day of Democracy, with the theme, “Bring Human Rights into Focus”.
Mrs Tinubu said the theme underscored the need to respect and protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen as Nigeria consolidates its democratic gains.
She noted that Nigeria, 65 years after independence and more than 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, had recorded significant progress through stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and increased citizen participation in governance.
“Sixty-five years after independence and over 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, Nigeria has made significant progress through stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and greater citizen participation in governance,” she said.

The First Lady, however, urged Nigerians to sustain collective efforts to strengthen democracy and ensure that it served the interests of all citizens.
“Let us collectively continue to work together to strengthen our democracy, ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians, and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” she said.
She congratulated Nigerians on the occasion, urging continued commitment to democratic values and the protection of human rights.
