A security guard alleged to be responsible for the murder of Justice Ifeoma Okogwu in her residence in Asaba, Delta State, has been arrested by operatives of the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Delta State Police Command.

The suspect was apprehended alongside one of his accomplices on Saturday, December 6, in Anambra State. The third suspect is still at large.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, said, “Operatives of the homicide section of State CID, acting on intelligence, have arrested one Godwin Mngumi, aged 25 years, the security [guard] who allegedly murdered Justice Ifeoma Okogwu (retd) [in Anambra State] and the phone of the late Retd Justice has also been recovered from him.”

He said that the suspect confessed that he invited his friend, one Nnaji Obalum, and one other suspect at large over to the house, where they carried out the dastardly act together. Nnaji Obalum has also been arrested while the manhunt for the third suspect is ongoing.

Justice Okogwu was found dead in her apartment after her brother made a complaint on November 24 to the Divisional Police Officer (‘A’ Division, Asaba) that he visited her residence only to discover her lifeless body in the sitting room with her hands, legs, and mouth tied.

Edafe had said that upon receipt of the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer swiftly led men to her residence, where the corpse was evacuated and taken to the mortuary for autopsy.

He said that one suspect, Lucky Matthew, was arrested, while the principal suspect, “Godwin Vanem”, is presently at large.

On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, he said that the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (Homicide section) for discreet investigation.

According to him, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the said Godwin Vanem is suspected of having committed the dastardly act and fled the apartment. The command has launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspect.”
