Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Kingsley Esiso has said the mega rally of the party scheduled to hold at Ozoro this Saturday is not to unveil the governorship candidate of the party in the state for next year’s election.
This is coming amidst confusing reports in sections of the media that the agenda of the rally is to unveil the candidate of the party.
Already, there is a matter in the Appeal Court filed by Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori who won the party’s primary on May 25, 2022.
His appeal was occasioned by an Abuja High Court judgement which sacked him over discrepancies in his certificates.
The court held that David Edevbie who came second in the primary should be the candidate of the party.
Our correspondent learnt that Saturday’s mega rally is also a show of strength for the party.
A source informed that support groups for Oborevwori have been activated for the rally.
“We have been told to wear yellow T-shirt and fez caps which are branded with Oborevwori.
“Also, groups were told to mount three billboards each in support of Oborevwori in all the 25 local government areas. As we speak now, all is set for the rally,” a source said.
Esiso also confirmed that the rally would hold as planned, adding however that unveiling the governorship candidate was not the agenda.
Esiso said he has not received any correspondence from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the High Court judgement, sacking Oborevwori and recognising Edevbie.
He however added that he was not aware if there was a correspondence to that effect to the national secretariat of the party in Abuja.
Meanwhile, Edevbie’s camp believed that their principal is now the party’s candidate, on the ground that the INEC had already issued him the form E13B to fill.
Head of Strategic Communications, Fred Edoreh in a series of reply to inquiries on WhatsApp, said the rally was a party affair, noting that the leadership of the PDP in the state was very responsible and would not be lured into unveiling a fake candidate.
“So long as they do not announce an unlawful candidate… I believe the leadership of the party is matured and responsible enough to know and do the right, proper and reasonable thing,” he stated.
Edoreh added that INEC “would ordinarily write to the national secretariat, and I am sure the NWC has good control of the affairs of the party and is able to direct.”
