A passenger train conveying people from Ujevwu train station, near Warri Delta State en route Agbor derailed yesterday, causing a major accident on the corridor.
Although details of the incident were sketchy, sources said death was recorded and several other injured as the accident happened with four coaches capsizing.
Confirming it, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said, “the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms a serious train accident at Agbor along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor.
He said NRC would provide updates on the accident as more details would emerge.

Opeifa said rescue and emergency response operations were ongoing at the scene while relevant authorities were working to ascertain the full extent of the incident.
“The corporation is closely monitoring developments and will provide a comprehensive update as more details emerge on the cause and extent of the derailment,” he said.
Opeifa urged members of the public to be calm and rely only on official communication channels for information regarding the accident.
