Deadly Israeli airstrike targets Hezbollah in Lebanon

At least ten people, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli attack that occurred in southern Lebanon. Five more people were hurt, two of them gravely, according to the Ministry of Health in Lebanon, confirming the horrific toll in the Nabatieh neighbourhood.

Claiming to have targeted a Hezbollah weapons storage close to Nabatieh, around seven miles from the Israeli border, the Israeli military justified the midnight action. The IDF had earlier claimed on social media that their jets had struck “military buildings” in communities further to the south.

Local accounts, however, paint a different picture. According to the National News Agency, a Syrian caretaker and his family were killed after an attack destroyed a brick factory in Wadi al-Kfour. Home to companies and even a dairy farm, the region is described as “industrial and civilian” by Mohammad Shoaib, who runs a slaughterhouse nearby.

This devastating incident marks one of the deadliest since cross-border hostilities erupted in October. The violence began when Hezbollah, in solidarity with Hamas, engaged Israeli forces following an attack on southern Israel. Since then, hundreds have died on both sides, with tensions escalating dramatically after a July rocket attack killed twelve in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Hezbollah denied any involvement in the incident, despite Israel accusing the group of doing so. But fears of a far larger battle have been sparked by the murder of Hamas’s political chief in Tehran and the death of a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

Hezbollah, vowing retaliation, recently released footage showcasing its arsenal, including missiles being moved through underground tunnels. Analysts believe this is a deliberate move to deter Israel from further aggression.

Despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on his country’s readiness for both defence and offence, pressure is mounting for a ceasefire in Gaza. Many hope this will avert a catastrophic regional war involving Lebanon and Iran.
