Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi apologised after his side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
Despite Conor Gallagher scoring Tottenham’s first goal of the season against Premier League opposition with a header 20 minutes from time, Spurs could not complete the comeback and remain with only one victory so far this season.
“We have to shoot more times, we have to shoot better, we have to finish better in clear situations,” De Zerbi said. “We are sorry for the result, disappointed, frustrated for the result. I think it was unfair, but we have to accept it and be stronger than this unlucky moment.”
The Italian admitted that Tottenham had been unfortunate during their opening matches, pointing to previous games against Newcastle and Everton as well as the latest defeat.
“I’m honest, I’m honest with myself and I’m honest with you, I think in these five, six games, we have been for sure not lucky with Newcastle, with Everton, even with Nottingham and tonight as well,” he said.
De Zerbi, however, accepted responsibility for Tottenham’s defending, particularly for the goals conceded against Liverpool.
“The first goal we conceded we didn’t defend in the right way, and the second goal we could be closer with Gakpo,” he continued. “I think watching the game, the last three games, four games, maybe until minute 60 with Newcastle, I think we are in the right way.”
The former Brighton manager insisted he remains confident in his squad despite the difficult start and believes Tottenham can turn their performances into results.
“I believe in my players; I have a big confidence, a big opinion of my players, and when we arrive to find the click, to win a game. I think we enjoy with these players, because the qualities of the players are incredible.”
De Zerbi also highlighted several players he believes can help Spurs improve, naming Marmoush, Savio, Kudus, Lucas Bergvall, Mateus Fernandes, Robertson, Pedro Porro and Solanke among those he trusts to make an impact.
