The Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, Mr David Bird, has assured Nigerians that the multi-billion-dollar Dangote Refinery is strategically positioned to enhance fuel supply stability, promote competitive pricing and significantly strengthen the nation’s economy.

Speaking during an interaction with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Council, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the refinery said the facility is currently operating in phases, with production lines being optimised to ensure efficiency, quality control and long-term sustainability.

According to him, the primary objective of the refinery remains meeting Nigeria’s domestic petroleum demand while gradually expanding exports to other African markets.

“We are progressing steadily, our production systems are being carefully optimised to guarantee operational efficiency and sustainability. Our goal is to ensure Nigeria attains energy security and reduces dependency on imported petroleum products,” Bird noted.

While acknowledging concerns about fuel supply stability in the country, Bird expressed confidence that local refining would significantly address longstanding supply chain challenges, explaining that by refining crude oil domestically, Nigeria would reduce its reliance on imports, ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves and create a more stable fuel distribution framework.

“As we ramp up production capacity, Nigerians will begin to experience improved product availability and reduced supply disruptions,” he said.

Responding to questions about fuel pricing, the MD/CEO noted that while global crude oil prices, exchange rates, logistics and regulatory frameworks influence pump prices, local refining would eliminate several import-related costs.

“Though we may not control all external market variables, our presence introduces competition, operational efficiency and cost savings that can contribute to greater price stability over time,” he explained.

Industry analysts believe the refinery’s operations could potentially moderate fuel pricing volatility in the long term.

Mr Bird emphasised that the refinery’s economic benefits extend beyond fuel production. He noted that the project supports thousands of direct and indirect jobs, stimulates local industries, conserves foreign exchange and increases government revenue generation.

“The refinery is more than a fuel-producing facility. It is an industrial ecosystem that strengthens Nigeria’s economic foundation and positions the country as a refining hub in Africa,” he added.

On environmental concerns, the MD/CEO assured that the refinery was built using modern technology that complies with global environmental standards.

He said the company remains committed to minimising emissions, enhancing energy efficiency and maintaining responsible operational practices aligned with international best standards.

Mr Bird further disclosed that the refinery is working with both local and international crude suppliers to ensure steady feedstock availability.

“Our partnerships are structured to guarantee long-term sustainability and operational continuity. We are focused on building a resilient supply chain,” he said.

He described the refinery as a strategic, long-term investment in Nigeria’s energy and economic future.

“We understand the expectations of Nigerians. This project is designed to serve not just Nigeria but the African continent. We remain committed to delivering value, stability and growth,” he concluded.
