The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, has cautioned journalists nationwide to remain vigilant amid the rising use of the Cybercrime Act to prosecute media professionals.
He made the call while presiding over the Gombe State NUJ Executive Council meeting, where he reiterated the union’s commitment to strengthening ethical journalism and safeguarding practitioners.
Comrade Yahaya underscored the need for members to uphold professional ethics, prioritize personal safety during assignments, and actively promote NUJ programs across all platforms. He also charged journalists to rally behind ongoing initiatives designed to improve the welfare of veteran practitioners.
Providing an update on national welfare reforms, the NUJ President revealed that the union is finalizing new interventions, including a health insurance scheme and weigh-in allowances, alongside other benefits aimed at elevating journalists’ working conditions. He stressed that unity, forgiveness, and professionalism remain strategic levers for repositioning the profession.

Gombe State NUJ Chairman, Malam Farouk Mu’azu Gombe, commended the national leadership for its steady support, describing Yahaya’s engagement style as a model for sustainable union governance.
Meanwhile, former chairmen of the NUJ in Gombe, Abubakar Adamu, Alhaji Abubakar Abba, and Sa’idu Bappah Malala along with former NAWOJ National President, Asabe Baba Nahaya, and other senior union members, applauded Yahaya’s leadership footprint. They noted that within a year, he has reconciled previously divided national stakeholders and rolled out several impactful reforms.
The elders equally praised the performance of the current Gombe NUJ leadership.
During the meeting, Comrade Yahaya inaugurated the NUJ Gombe State Advisory Committee comprising past leaders: Asabe Baba Nahaya, Abubakar Adamu, Abubakar Abba, Alhassan Yahaya, and Sa’idu Bappah Malala. Speaking on behalf of the committee, Asabe Baba Nahaya appreciated the trust bestowed on them and pledged to deliver on the mandate.
