Team Nigeria’s medal winners at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have begun receiving immediate cash rewards from the Federal Government through the National Sports Commission (NSC), in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s pledge to promptly reward outstanding performances.
The athletes received a combination of instant cash presentations at the competition venue and direct bank transfers shortly after winning their medals, underscoring the government’s renewed commitment to athlete welfare and motivation.
Paralympian Roland Ezuruike, who claimed a silver medal in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting (Group A), received a total reward of $5,000, comprising $2,000 presented immediately by the NSC and $3,000 paid directly into his account.
Gold medalist Esther Nwogu, winner of the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, received the highest reward of the day, earning $8,000 in total. She was presented with an instant cash reward of $3,000, while an additional $5,000 was transferred directly to her account.

Another silver medalist, Esther Onyema, also received $5,000, made up of a $2,000 instant cash award at the venue and a $3,000 direct bank transfer.
The prompt payment of rewards reflects the National Sports Commission’s policy of recognising athletes immediately after their medal-winning performances, a move aimed at boosting morale and encouraging excellence.
The cash rewards come as Team Nigeria opened its medal campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with an impressive showing in para powerlifting, setting the tone for the country’s quest for honours at the Games.
