Team Nigeria produced a wave of strong performances on Day Five of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with athletes across track and pool booking their places in the semifinals as the country pushes for further medal success.
On the track, Edidiong Udo made an eye-catching debut in the men’s 400 metres, winning Heat One in 45.73 seconds — a margin of almost a full second — to reach the semifinals in his first international outing over the distance for Nigeria. He joins Samuel Ogazi, giving the country two men in the semifinal field.
The women’s 400m also delivered good news, as Esther Elo Joseph clinched her first Commonwealth Games semifinal berth with a third-place heat finish in 52.82 seconds. Patience Okon-George followed her in, finishing fourth in 53.27 seconds, while Ella Onojuvwevwo also advanced — giving Nigeria three finalists in contention for the last four.
In the pool, Nigeria doubled its representation in the men’s 50m butterfly semifinals. Abduljabar Adama touched fourth in his heat in 23.99 seconds, with Colins Ebingha right behind in fifth at 24.01 seconds.
The evening session promises even more drama, with sprinters Kayinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe and Nicholas Fakorede lining up in the men’s 100m semifinals, and Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu and Blessing Ogundiran flying the flag in the women’s event. A strong showing could put all six in Tuesday night’s finals.
Elsewhere, Oyesade Olatoye will chase a podium finish in the women’s hammer throw final, Patricia Mbata steps into the ring for her women’s 75kg boxing quarterfinal, and Nigeria’s wheelchair women’s 3×3 basketball team takes on Australia.
With six gold medals already banked, Team Nigeria heads into the evening looking to extend its strong showing at Glasgow 2026.
