Customs intercepts I, 667 used tyres, 179 bags of rice in Oyo, Osun

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Command, has intercepted 1, 667 units of used tyres worth over N160million.

The command also seized 170 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50 kilograms each valued at N14, 960, 000.

The disclosure was made by Dr Ben Oramalugo, immediate past Customs Area Controller for the command, when he did his valedictory press briefing in Ibadan on Friday, shortly before he handed over the mantle of leadership of the command and proceeded to his new duty post at Seme Borders.

According to him, the smuggled items were confiscated between December 20 2024 and January 31, 2025. He put the duty paid value of the seized smuggled goods at N202 784,000

The contraband goods within the period also comprised 32 bales and four sacks of used clothes valued at N23, 040, 000 and N2, 880, 000 respectively.

Also on the list were two sacks of used shoes valued at N1, 080, 000 and 40 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) of 25 litres each, valued at N792,000.

Oramalugo stated: “Through sustained efforts, the Oyo/Osun Area Command has achieved tremendous progress in countering unlawful activities that endanger our country’s security and impede the growth of our local industry.”

He added that the command generated N82, 193, 426, 334.10k in 2024  for the Federal Government, which was 15.3 per cent higher than the amount collected in the fiscal year 2023, which was N71,292,530,398.17k.

Oramalugo announced that for the month of January 2025 alone, the command collected N7, 804, 408, 776.88k.

Oramalugo commended Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, as well as the entire management team for their unwavering support for the command.
