The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for freezing the statutory account of the Osun State Government, describing the move as politically biased and a threat to public trust.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Agu Diamond Bryan, the opposition coalition questioned the timing and neutrality of the anti-graft agency’s action against an opposition-controlled state while similar measures were not applied during recent elections in ruling-party states.
Although President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly directed the EFCC to vacate the freezing order, CUPP dismissed the executive directive as an afterthought sparked by widespread public outcry rather than a genuine commitment to institutional independence.
“While the EFCC derives its powers from its Establishment Acts of 2002 and 2004 to investigate and prosecute economic and financial-related crimes, such powers must be exercised strictly within the limits of the Constitution, observing due process and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The coalition drew direct comparisons to the June 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State—governed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—noting that no such drastic financial freezes were implemented there.CUPP warned against turning Osun State into a testing ground for selective anti-corruption enforcement, demanding that any scrutiny applied to Osun be equally enforced across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.“Why is it only Osun State—an opposition-controlled state preparing for a governorship election on August 15, 2026—that is witnessing such an extraordinary intervention?” the group asked.
“The fight against corruption must never be conducted in a manner that creates the perception of political selectivity, particularly during an election period when public confidence in democratic institutions is of paramount importance.”
Reiterating its support for the rule of law and the fight against graft, CUPP emphasised that Nigerians deserve an anti-corruption agency that operates with consistency, professionalism, and complete independence from political influence.
The coalition urged all public institutions to refrain from actions that undermine national unity or taint the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral processes, insisting that the integrity of the nation’s constitutional order must remain sacrosanct.
