In a devastating turn of events, the serene coastal community of Okuoma in the Bomadi LGA of Delta state has been engulfed by chaos and flames following the tragic loss of 16 military personnel on a peacekeeping mission.
Tukur Gusau, the director of information at the defence headquarters, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the fallen personnel included a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers. They were ambushed and killed by local youths on Thursday while responding to a distress call arising from a communal crisis between the Okuoma and Okoloba communities.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuoma and Okoloba communities both in Delta State,” stated Gusau. “The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”
Christopher Musa, the chief of defence staff (CDS), has promptly ordered an immediate investigation into the incident to unravel the circumstances surrounding the ambush.
In a distressing video footage on social media, thick plumes of black smoke could be seen rising from several buildings within the community, accompanied by flames flickering in the distance. Amidst the chaos, ominous warnings could be heard in the background.
Latest reports have confirmed the grim discovery of 14 “beheaded” corpses, some displaying signs of mutilation, further exacerbating the already tense situation. In fear of reprisal attacks from military forces, numerous residents have fled their homes, seeking refuge elsewhere.
Efforts to obtain further comments from Tukur Gusau regarding the unfolding events have been unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The nation remains gripped by shock and sorrow as authorities work tirelessly to bring clarity to this tragic incident.
