Akwa Ibom State government has urged residents of the state to remain vigilant at various health facilities and communities to check fresh case of COVID-19 in the state.
The warning was as the result of recent reports of fresh outbreak of the pandemic in Cross River state recently.
A statement jointly signed by Commissioners of Health and Information said such warning was necessary given the proximity of the state with her neighbours
The government officials said Governor Umo Eno after thorough briefing by the health commissioner has directed the ministry to heighten surveillance at all entry points to the state, health facilities and communities.
The statement read in parts: “Given the close geographic, social and economic interactions amongst the people, residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to public health guidelines.”
According to the commissioners, Eno further directed that Disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams be placed on alert to promptly detect and manage suspected cases.

“Citizens are advised to observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, refraining from handshakes and physical greetings, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing occur.
“Healthcare workers are also reminded to maintain a high index of suspicion and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols.”
The health commissioner said Eno also directed the ministry of health to strengthen their collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC ) and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response.
“The government hereby reassures residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health.
“The public is encouraged to rely only on verified information from the Ministry of Health and to avoid spreading unverified reports that may cause unnecessary panic.
“To this end, an enquiries desk has been set up at the Ministry of health with the following offers available to assist members of the public.”
