Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Football Federation, or FECOFA, has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of several financial crimes.

The verdict came after an eight-month investigation into claims of corruption and financial misconduct at the country’s football regulatory organization.

A court found Mayolas guilty of money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, and the use of forged documents.

The ruling was delivered in his absence, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges brought against him.

Two other senior officials of the federation were also convicted in connection with the case.

FECOFA Secretary-General, Badji Mombo Wantete, and the federation’s Treasurer, Raoul Kanda, were each sentenced to five years in prison over their roles in the financial irregularities.

The verdict is being viewed as a significant step in the authorities’ push to promote transparency and accountability in the administration of football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Officials say holding senior figures responsible for wrongdoing will help rebuild confidence in the country’s sporting institutions.

The development has provoked significant emotions among football fans, players, and stakeholders, with many calling for long-term reforms to combat corruption and ensuring that finances intended for the game’s development are managed appropriately.

Observers say the case illustrates the larger issues that sports organisations confront in maintaining financial integrity and reinforces the message that corruption will result in harsh consequences regardless of rank or position.
