Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON) has distanced itself from the idea and warned against the use of the association’s name in any form.

The National President of the Association, Albert Asipa and one time chairman of Imeko/Afon Local Government area of Ogun State reiterated that ASELGON is a conglomerate of political parties, consisting of members from the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) among others.

He maintained that with this outlook, it would be preposterous for anybody or party to lay claim to the association as its own.

“So, I enjoin my members, especially the states’ Chairmen to be vigilant as reports abound that some people are parading themselves as members of ASELGON and seeking to be part of the ongoing alignment of forces.

“I have been inundated with several  phone calls on the involvement of ASELGON in the political development and I consider it incumbent to make it categorically cleared that our association is not and cannot be part of anything of such and at the same time call on the unscrupulous elements dragging our noble association into such to please desist.”

While reiterating the need for members to ensure the protection of the integrity of the association, Asipa maintained that the efforts put into building it in the last one decade must not be allowed to be rubbished by desperate politicians.

“It is a reality that our association cannot be pushed aside in the political affairs of this country because of the privilege it has pleased God to give us to serve our people at one time or the other, but, at the same time, we must not fall for the antics of selfish politicians and lose our focus.“ASELGON is not for sale. The essence of our coming together is to further our interest in the development of the grassroots, avail the younger generation our vast experience towards making our society better and also add our voice to the struggle for the local government autonomy which we see as a catalyst for even development in the country,” he said.

He promised that the forthcoming national convention of the association holding in Jos, Plateau State, would provide a unique opportunity for the association to further advance its cause.
