The AIG of zone 6, Mr Jonathan Towuru, called for the cooperation of political parties in Cross River for the peaceful conduct of the general elections in the state.
The AIG, who made the appeal on Thursday in Calabar during a meeting with the leadership of the 17 political parties that would participate in the elections in Cross River, assured of neutrality of the police before, during and after the polls.
Towuru, who appealed to the leadership of the parties to sensitive their supporters to play by the rule, said it behoves all stakeholders to try and maintain good contracts during elections.
He said: “I am here appealing to you to speak with your supporters to eschew violence and main good conduct during the elections.
“I don’t want violence, we must all strive for peace before, during and after the elections. Before the election, we were brothers and we will remain so after the elections.”
On the attacks on the opposition party in h state, the AIG said he was aware of the incident and that some personnel have been deployed to the area and he expects an interim report on the incident.
Speaking at the meeting, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Mr Anthony Bissong, expressed worry at the spate of political violence that has engulfed the state within the past weeks and called for action from the security agency.
He particularly bemoaned the attack and destruction of properties of the opposition while the police remained mute on it.
He said: “Only yesterday, in broad daylight, the House of the PDP chairman in Obudu was attacked and his properties including vehicles and household items destroyed.
“Similar attacks have occured in the past few weeks and there has been no action from the police either,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in charge of elections in the state, Aliyu Garba, has charged police personnel deployed to the three senatorial districts of the state to be neutral in the discharge of their duty.
Garba also warned them not to infringe on the rights of anyone in the process of discharging their duties.
