The Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Okorie Uche, has pledged to pursue the full implementation of the new approved road map for Engineering practice in Nigeria.
Speaking at a dinner organised in his honour in Kano by his Committee of Friends yesterday, he explained that the new road map has widened the scope of regulations to include many under-captured sectors of engineering in Nigeria.
He explained that unlike previously, when the focus of regulations was largely on building and construction engineering, the new road map has brought about deeper regulatory activities in about eleven new sectors, including mining, agro-allied, telecommunications, aviation, oil and gas, among others.
He assured that with him as Registrar, engineering regulations would be re-engineered in such a way that non-engineers and the general public would be comfortable with engineering infrastructures across Nigeria.
Uche, also pledged to ensure a significant drop in the cases of building collapse, poor road construction, or power-grid failure arising from engineering deficits or poor construction.

He envisaged an environment where standards are prioritized and engineers are made to appreciate that their professional activities are being watch-dogged by COREN.
Speaking at the occasion, the President, World Federation of Engineering Organizations, Mustapha Shehu, lauded his appointment as Registrar, admitting that the appointment was timely but the job was challenging.
He charged him to ensure high standards in the sector and to liaise with the appropriate authorities and stakeholders to halt the practice whereby engineering jobs and opportunities are contracted to foreigners and their firms or handed out to non-professional engineers to execute.
He insisted that this practice has led to the displacement of Nigerian Engineers, including undermining the development, growth, and prosperity of the certified members of the Engineering profession.
