The Coalition of Opposition Political Parties (COPP) has condemned the recent political violence in Bakassi local government area of Cross River State against the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The Coalition, which comprises a number of political parties, including APM, ZLP, YPP, ACCORD, BOOT, and the NNPP, described the violence as totally unacceptable.

Speaking after a meeting, Comrade Victory Okoi, the spokesperson of the coalition, expressed disbelief over the attack where the hoodlums reportedly chanted that “APC is the only party they want in Bakassi.”

According to him, “Nigeria is not a one-party state, and Cross River will not be the first to actualise a one-party state.

“We have 21 registered political parties in Nigeria, and they are as free as the air to go about their activities.

“The coalition expresses her disappointment and calls on Governor Otu, as a matter of urgency, to bring those hoodlums to book.

“Cross River has been known for her long-standing political peace, and we want to maintain that record come the 2027 general elections.

“Youths should not allow themselves to be used by politicians against the law of the land,” he said.

The coalition also called for calm, patriotism and tasked security agencies in the state to watch out for the activities of these hoodlums, especially now that elections are fast approaching.
