There was boundless joy and celebration in Ugwuaji, a thickly populated community in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, recently. For two days, July 23 and 26, the people trooped out to witness the launch of some strategic roads that traverse the area.

The roads, attracted by the member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Chimaobi Atu, of Labour Party (LP), would enable easy evacuation of farm produce to the two major markets there.

Atu stated that the 1.2km Eke Market-Umumba-Afor Market Road, in Ndiagu Ugwuaji community, will facilitate further development of the area.

He said the road linking both major markets and would contribute greatly to boost the economy of the community and create wealth among farmers and traders.

“This is part of the campaign promises I made to our people during my election and a way to appreciate the good people of Ugwuaji for their support to me.

“I thank the good people of Ugwuaji community for believing in me and giving me your mandate to represent you.

“It is all through the grace of God, and I believe that to whom much is given, much is expected. I am assuring you that more dividends of democracy are still coming; even I have installed solar streetlights in most parts of the constituency.

“What I have in mind to do for the people in order to reposition and ensure quality representation and people-oriented leadership is much,” he said.

The lawmaker appreciated the state government and the security agencies for ensuring security of lives and properties in the state, adding: “I appeal to everyone to support government at all levels as they provide security meant to ensure that human and commercial activities thrive.”

Atu, who did not disclose the monetary value of the project, urged the people to own the project and assist the contractor handling the project to ensure timely and quality delivery, according to laid-down specifications for the project.

He vowed to oversee the construction of road projects in his constituency to ensure that contractors comply with specified designs.

Atu said, even though some contractors do not compromise standards, he would ensure that no space was given for residents to complain about the quality of projects being executed in his constituency.

Inaugurating the construction of the 1.9km Ayo Station-Ndiagu-Obeagu Ugwuaji link road (phase one) and its spur, he noted that the insecurity pervading Nigeria could best be resolved by empowering the youths with infrastructure and services. He stated that peace was the seed for any development.

“My people deserve the best; I will ensure that they get the best. I will oversee the project to ensure that federal government’s name is not brought to opprobrium. I seek a good name and I don’t have any other option than that.

“This road will boost the economy of the residents and it will serve the people well. I give credit to our political leader, Mr. Peter Obi, for his ideology of moving from consumption to production. I also salute President Bola Tinubu for signing into law the South East Development Commission Bill,” Atu said.

Traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community, Igwe Nwobodo Nyia, who graced the two ceremonies, noted that Atu remained a trailblazer. For him, the legislator was God-sent to liberate Ugwuaji from lack of dividends of democracy.

The monarch said: “We are witnessing development that has eluded our people for some years; and Atu, today, has shown he is capable of providing leadership and direction to our people.

“Politicians of the past preferred building themselves, not minding the people, but Chinaobi Atu builds the society. Any young man, who wants to be great should forget about greatness, just offer yourself to serve people.

“I am urging other politicians and leaders to emulate Atu and be people-centred in all they do and ensure alleviation of hardship, among the people.”

Remarking, chairman of the Labour Party in Enugu South LGA, Chief Chinwuba Ngwu, said that the party was proud of Atu’s achievements within a short time in the House of Representatives, pointing out that the federal legislator “has sponsored 14 bills and he remained outspoken in the House.”

He said that Atu before now had embarked on extensive provision of solar streetlights, scholarship to students and direct empowerment to indigent people living within the constituency.

Chief executive officer of one of the contacting firms, Sir Azodo Engineering Services Ltd, Chief Onyeka Azodo, pledged that the company would abide by specifications and ensure timely completion and handover of the project.

A resident of Ugwuaji community, Mrs. Peace Onuoha, thanked Atu and the Federal Government for the gesture, adding: “We already have solar streetlights; and with the new road our trading in Eke market will flourish the more.”
