Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS) stance on the recent fuel price increase.
Earlier on Wednesday, Okunomo Henry Adewumi, identified as NANS Senate President, announced a planned nationwide shutdown of major cities on September 15, in protest of the fuel price hike.
Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, who also claims to be the president of the NANS Senate, refuted any such plans in a subsequent statement that was made public shortly after. According to Afeez, there has been no endorsement of protests by the student body, and the rumours are unfounded.

The statement asked security agencies to look into the origin of the “misinformation” and take appropriate action against those who do it. It underlined NANS’ dedication to nonviolent protest and productive participation.
“We wish to categorically state that NANS has not announced or endorsed any such protest,” the statement reads. “These reports are entirely baseless and do not reflect the position or intentions of our organisation.”
