The Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, has rated the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, high in medical and applied sciences.
Mbah, who spoke yesterday during the university’s first Open Day, said high-quality infrastructures, state-of-the-art equipment, laboratories, hostels, medical centre, library, well-trained personnel, and experienced management team placed the institution among the best medical and applied sciences universities in the country.
He assured the school management that the state government would continue to support the university with needed educational interventions to enable them to continue to build on the existing standards and improve where necessary.
“I’m glad about the modern state-of-the-art equipment in the laboratories, classrooms hostels, library, and medical centre of SUMAS courtesy of the Enugu State government.
“This no doubt has positioned the university as one of the best in the country, as well as makes it a centre of excellence in medical and applied science education in the country.
“The state government will continue to support the university with needed educational interventions to enable it realise the aims of establishing it which bordered on increase access to quality engineering, natural and applied sciences, allied health sciences and medical university education and provision of affordable health care service delivery,” he said.
The commissioner who was represented by Mrs. Juliana Ugwu, Education Supervisor in Enugu North Senatorial District, urged prospective students, parents and guardians to use the opportunity of the Open Day to go around the university and see for themselves the state-of-the-art edifices, modern teaching and learning equipment in Faculties, departments, laboratories and the University’s medical centre.
Earlier in his remark, Prof James Ogbonna, the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, said the Open Day was a day set aside by the university to allow prospecting students and the general public to visit the institution and get acquainted with their programmes and services.
“This university was founded with the aim of providing the youths in the state and beyond easy access to quality allied health sciences and medical university education, provide accessible, quality and affordable health care services delivery, among other things.
“The Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students especially science students in the state and the general public to visit and get familiar with the programmes/courses and services we offer in the university, ask questions and receive answers immediately,” he said.
