A Baptist cleric, Rev. Samson Okoro Elekwa, has praised the family of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for what he described as an exceptional act of compassion and service to humanity during the Christmas season.
Speaking during a church function held in Bende LGA on Tuesday, Rev. Elekwa disclosed that the Kalu family, in collaboration with the senator’s brothers, Chief Nnanna and Mascot Uzor Kalu, extended support to more than 9,500 families across the 17 local government areas of Abia State, with each beneficiary receiving N25,000 as part of the 2025 Christmas outreach.
He noted that although the gesture did not come as a surprise to many residents, the sheer scale of the intervention prompted him to personally confirm the report. According to the cleric, confirmation came after he contacted the Chairman of the Abia State chapter of the OUK Movement, Hon. Sunday Ojisi (Abacha), who verified the distribution.
Describing the initiative as a rare and sincere expression of love, Rev. Elekwa said the gesture reflects the core values of Christianity. “This is the true spirit of love. Christ preached love while on earth, and this family has demonstrated that love in practical terms,” he said.

He added that Senator Kalu and his brothers have consistently shown generosity and empathy, particularly at a time when many families are facing severe economic challenges. He urged other affluent Nigerians to emulate the example by supporting the less privileged in their communities.
Beyond the Christmas outreach, Senator Kalu has also been widely recognised for sustained philanthropic efforts across Abia North and other parts of the state. These include scholarships, classroom construction, and the donation of educational materials to schools.
The lawmaker has equally made notable contributions to healthcare through medical outreaches, donation of hospital equipment, and support for patients in need of urgent medical attention, especially in underserved rural communities.
In addition, he has been credited with various empowerment initiatives targeting youths and women, such as skills acquisition programmes, financial support for small businesses, and community development projects including road rehabilitation and water schemes.
Rev. Elekwa concluded by offering prayers for God’s continued guidance and strength for the Kalu family, stressing that selfless service and kindness remain the true markers of leadership, capable of fostering unity, peace, and shared responsibility in society.
