Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to the President-elect of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, over his victory at the polls.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China disclosed this on its official website.

The 49-year-old Wadagni defeated his closest rival, Paul Hounkpe of the FCBE, to emerge the winner of the April 12, 2026, presidential election in the country.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “On April 24, 2026, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Romuald Wadagni on his election as President of the Republic of Benin.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry further said President Xi pointed out that China and Benin enjoyed a traditional friendship.

“In recent years, the two sides have continued to deepen political mutual trust, firmly supported each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns, and achieved remarkable progress in friendly cooperation across various fields, effectively improving the well-being of the peoples of both countries,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry also said.

The Chinese Government added that President Xi attached great importance to the development of China-Benin relations and stands ready to work with President-elect Romuald Wadagni to continue implementing the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and elevate the China-Benin strategic partnership to new heights.
