The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Yu Dunhai, has extolled ECOWAS’s role in promoting regional integration, maintaining peace and stability, and advancing democratic governance in West Africa.
Yu gave the commendation during a meeting with ECOWAS Commission President, Alieu Omar Touray, in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, Yu noted that over the past 50 years since its establishment, ECOWAS has played a significant role in regional integration, peace, and democratic governance, making it the most influential sub-regional organisation in Africa.
“The relationship between China and ECOWAS serves as a model of South-South cooperation and a vivid reflection of China-Africa friendship.

“The ECOWAS headquarters, constructed with Chinese assistance, stands as a landmark project of bilateral cooperation.
“The Recommendations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China for the 15th Five-Year Plan clearly state that China will share more development opportunities with countries worldwide. China is willing to accelerate the implementation of zero-tariff measures in Africa to bring new opportunities for West Africa,” Yu said.
During the visit, Yu presented a China-made vehicle to Touray for his official duties.
In response, Touray expressed gratitude for China’s assistance and support towards the institutional and capacity-building of ECOWAS.
“ECOWAS admires China’s development achievements, supports the four global initiatives proposed by China, and is committed to strengthening exchanges and cooperation to open a new chapter in bilateral relations,” Touray said.
