China on Monday said ’s decision to appoint as the country’s new supreme leader was an internal matter, stressing that the move followed Iran’s constitutional process.

The appointment comes after the killing of former Iranian leader during the first wave of strikes carried out by and on Iran more than a week ago.

Israel’s military has since warned that any successor to the late leader could become a target as tensions between the countries continue to escalate.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei was based on Iran’s constitutional provisions.

“China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected,” he said when asked about the threats against the new leader.

Meanwhile, Israel and the United States have continued strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran has responded with waves of missile and drone attacks against Israel and Gulf countries hosting US forces.
