Tragedy struck at the sleepy community of Irrua in Okada, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, where A 21-year old lady, Aisha Bello, reportedly died due to complications arising from the abortion of a two-month old pregnancy.
Aisha died on October 5, 2022 while being rushed to one Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital following severe pains in her lower abdomen precisely one week after the abortion.
It was gathered that the late Aisha had, on September 26, 2022, gone with her secret lover, Eregare Jeremiah and her friend Kehinde Dahiru, to have an abortion in an undisclosed clinic.
Said to be a victim of child marriage, Aisha attempted to abort the pregnancy that resulted from an adulterous affair with her lover, Jeremiah, in order to protect the secret relationship.
Against her wishes, Aisha, at the age of ten, was betrothed to one Alhaji Idowu Adamu, a Zamfara State-based business tycoon with strong political ties, for economic reasons.
At 14 years old, she was forced into the marriage in a traditional ceremony, and became Alhaji Adam’s third wife.
The teenage wife bore her wealthy husband a daughter two years after the forceful union.
According to her parents, the said Alhaji Idowu Adamu who had been responsible for Aisha’s secondary education, promised to allow her continue with her higher education later on, which was part of the terms the early marriage was agreed upon.
At the time of her death, Aisha was back home with her parents to complete her secondary education by enrolling for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). She was also billed to sit for the university entrance examination conducted by the Joint Admissions Examination Board (JAMB).
Her husband had agreed to her request to continue her education after her first delivery.
Residents in the neighborhood who volunteered information on the condition of anonymity, revealed that Aisha had always publicly protested her parents’ decision to marry her off at such an early age.
She was said to have threatened to elope with a man of her choice, and not returned to her husband once she got into the university.
Meanwhile, peeved by the circumstances surrounding the death of his wife, Alhaji Idowu Adamu facilitated the arrest of Kehinde Dahiru for alleged conspiracy.
Dahiru, it was learnt, was allegedly tortured until she revealed the location of the undisclosed clinic where the abortion was carried out.
Following Dahiru’s confession, the Adamu stormed the place with policemen and hoodlums, got it shut down after whisking away two staff members when the resident doctor had absconded.
As at the time of this publication, both staff members of the clinic are yet to be seen as their whereabouts remained unknown.
Also, the whereabouts of Aisha’s secret lover were unknown at the time of this publication. Local sources said he left the country some days after the abortion was done.
Aisha’s husband and her parents were reported to have visited her secret lover’s house both in Lagos and also his family house in Sapele town of Delta State.
There are fears that with the amount of influence Alhaji Adamu wields, Aisha’s secret lover might suffer the same faith as the two clinic staff who were taken away since the police and thugs last visited the clinic.
