The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Ibiong Uyime over the alleged attack and torture of her five years old niece.

The attack came to public knowledge following a viral video which depicted a young girl bleeding on the face with swollen eyes.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday disclosed this in a formal response to the incident in Calabar.

According to him, “We were able to arrest one Ibiong Uyime Bassey (female) in connection with a viral video depicting the abuse of a minor.

“The suspect, a resident of Atimbo Road, was arrested on 11th March 2026 at about 10:45 hours by men of the A division Calabar of the Command following swift action taken after the video surfaced online.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect allegedly assaulted her five-year-old niece, Edidiong Uwem Aniefiok, with a spatula, causing injuries around the child’s right eye.

“Further examination also revealed bruises on other parts of the child’s body suggestive of sustained abuse. Investigation is currently ongoing and further updates will be provided soon”, he said.

Sources say the culprit who has four children uses the victim as a nanny for one of her children.

It was also gathered that Edidiong was manhandled because she took meat meant for a pot of soup.
