Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has apologised to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup and for not winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

Speaking in a post-match interview made available by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after Nigeria’s victory over Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in London, Chelle expressed his disappointment at missing out on football’s biggest tournament and thanked Nigerians for their unwavering support.

The Malian tactician said representing Nigeria at the World Cup would have been a memorable experience and reiterated his commitment to giving his best for the national team.

“I’m sorry we are not at the World Cup and also sorry we didn’t win the AFCON as many expected. I have always wanted the best for this team, but football is football,” Chelle said.

“I want to thank everyone for the support that was put into the team. If I have the time, I will always give my best.

“Once again, if I have the time with this national team, I will give my best. I try to improve in my job and I want to say thank you to this country.”

Chelle’s comments came after the Super Eagles ended their London outing on a positive note with a victory over Jamaica, as the coach reflected on the team’s recent setbacks and pledged continued dedication to the Nigerian national team.
