Chaos in South Africa over ‘Nigerian King’ coronation

South Africa protest over Nigerian king

By Lawrence Agbo

Chaos erupted in parts of South Africa following a protest against the controversial coronation of a self-proclaimed Nigerian king, Solomon Ezika.

The demonstration, led by community groups and traditional leaders in East London, initially began peacefully but later turned violent, with more than 10 vehicles reportedly set ablaze amid unverified claims that a protester had been stabbed.

In order to restore order, police used rubber bullets to disperse the gathering.

However, authorities stated that the reported stabbing is still unsubstantiated and that no official injuries have been reported.

Nigeria’s acting High Commissioner in South Africa, meanwhile, has distanced the diplomatic mission from Ezika, characterising the coronation as a singular event motivated by false information and devoid of any official authority.
