House of Reps

From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

The House of Representatives, descended into chaos, on Tuesday, as lawmakers fought  over which House Committee will preside over the probe of Lagos Trade Fair Complex.

Trouble started in the House, after a motion sponsored by chairman, House Committee on Public Assets, Ademoye Kuye, urging the House to probe the alleged sale of federal government assets in the Lagos Trade Fair Complex  was introduced.

The Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, in his intervention, informed the House that, in accordance of the House Rules, the rightful committee,  to undertake the probe is the   Committee on Commerce, and not the Committee on Public Assets.

However, lawmakers could not agree on which Committee should conduct the investigation, leading to the eventual rejection of the motion, through voice vote.

After the rejection of the motion, lawmakers become restive and started voting against all  subsequent motions. The development prompted the deputy speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over Tuesday’s session to call for executive session.
