Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has demanded disciplinary measures against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, following his brush with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The embattled lawmaker had accused the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State of sexual harassment, a claim that has been parried by Akpabio.
Weighing in on the matter yesterday in a statement, CHRICED Executive Director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, argued that the action of the senate violated the constitutional rights of women.
He accused the Senate President of making condescending remarks on female senators, which he said was ungentlemanly.
He said: “CHRICED calls on the Nigerian Senate to impose disciplinary measures against Senator Akpabio and to establish protocols that prevent such behaviour from being tolerated in the future within the upper chamber of the National Assembly.”
According to him, CHRICED would continue to stand in solidarity with women, who have been subjected to discrimination and disrespect in the workplace.
“It is crucial that we work towards creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for all, regardless of gender.
“We will continue to advocate for gender equality and the empowerment of women in all spheres of society. Senator Akpabio’s action is unacceptable, and we will not rest until women are able to participate in politics and public life without fear of discrimination or mistreatment,” he added.
