The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) have called on traditional rulers in the country to collaborate with relevant agencies in the fight against corruption.
Speaking at a courtesy call on the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, on Tuesday in Calabar, the Commissioner in charge of Monitoring in the Bureau, Mr Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, said it has become imperative to seek for support in this nick of time when corruption have become endemic in the country.
Attributing one of the reasons for insecurity in the country today to be corruption, Agbonayinma expressed worry at the way and manner fund meant for the general good of all are been filtered away by few individuals by virtue of their positions or the office they occupy.
He said that corruption have made it impossible for the country’s greatness to be realised.
He said: “Fighting corruption can’t be done alone by President Muhammadu Buhari or the CCB, it needs the collective efforts of all, especially the traditional rulers.
“Corruption have become an enemy that have taken from us what is ours. Nigeria had the potential to be a great country but for corruption.
“That is why we have come to sort the support of the Obong of Calabar I the fight against the menace.”
In his remarks, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, said the war against corruption cannot be won unless the family values is strengthened.
The traditional ruler also called for an “open door system” that would make everybody feel they belong to the country call Nigeria.
According to him, “fighting corruption starts from home as parents have to bring up their children with high moral value. We can’t succeed in the fight if we don’t go back home to create a moral value.
“Those fighting corruption must also subject themselves to the same law of the land and that there should not be room for selective treatment.
“We need to be active, consistent and treat all equally if we are serious about fighting corruption. It is unfortunate that those who sacrificed their lives for the country are hardly recognised.”
Other federal commissioners of CCB present include Prof. Samuel Ogundare, South West representative in the board, Mr Emmanuel Attah, Heads, states and local government and Mr Manager Benson, Cross River director of the CCB.
